Five Countries Consider Buying Pakistan's JF-17 Fighter Jets

(MENAFN) A quintet of nations is reportedly exploring acquisition deals for Pakistan's JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft, media disclosed Tuesday.

Iraq, Bangladesh, and Indonesia signaled procurement interest last month, Pakistan's Armed Forces confirmed. Saudi Arabia and Libya are additionally evaluating potential purchases, according to the report.

To date, export contracts have been finalized exclusively with Azerbaijan, Nigeria, and Myanmar—the inaugural international customer.

Production of the lightweight, all-weather warplane is split between Pakistani and Chinese manufacturers, with Pakistan's contribution encompassing roughly 58% of assembly, primarily the airframe. China furnishes the avionics systems, representing the remaining 42%. Powerplants are manufactured by Russian firm Klimov.

The heightened global attention follows last May's hostilities, during which Islamabad asserted its forces downed multiple Indian aircraft across a four-day period. India confirmed sustaining aerial losses during the engagement but withheld specific figures.

New Delhi simultaneously alleged destroying several Pakistani jets—an assertion Pakistan categorically rejects.

The JF-17 Thunder represents a collaborative venture between the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex stationed near Islamabad and China's AVIC Chengdu production facility in the nation's southwestern region. The partnership originated from a 1999 bilateral agreement.

Current manufacturing output stands at 16–18 units annually, with individual aircraft carrying a price tag between $40 million and $50 million.
